Gemini AI Gems Now Embedded in Gmail

Evanne Evans, 11 Jul 2025

Google is taking productivity to the next level with the integration of Gemini AI Gems into Gmail and the broader Google Workspace ecosystem. Announced at Google I/O and now rolling out across platforms, this feature introduces customizable AI-powered chatbots that reside directly within the Workspace side panel, providing users with seamless access to intelligent, task-focused support without requiring them to leave their inbox.

Gemini AI Gems are designed to assist users with specific tasks or roles. They can be tailored to act as personal assistants, such as a career guide, writing coach, or coding helper, by providing detailed instructions about their intended behavior and purpose.

Initially accessible only via the Gemini app, Gems have been integrated into Google Workspace applications like Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. This integration allows users to access their custom AI assistants directly from the side panel of these applications, streamlining workflows and enhancing productivity.

The Gems concept builds on the success of Google’s Gemini AI assistant, but with a twist: these aren’t just general-purpose bots; they’re tailored to specific tasks or needs. For example, users can create a Gem to help them draft marketing emails, summarize lengthy email threads, or prioritize to-do lists from incoming messages. According to The Verge, users can design Gems with specific instructions and even conversational styles, making each one unique to their workflow.

The real appeal of Gems is their direct accessibility. As reported by 9to5Google, these assistants reside within the familiar Workspace sidebar, eliminating the need to switch between tabs or applications. With a few clicks, you can ask a Gem to rewrite an email in a more professional tone, extract action items from a conversation, or summarize a customer support thread into key points for escalation.

For users with Google Workspace accounts, particularly those on the business and education tiers, Gems can be trained on company-specific documentation or tone guidelines, enabling them to operate as truly context-aware virtual assistants.

Tech analysts view this as a significant step forward in integrating generative AI within productivity tools. In essence, Gemini Gems bring personalized AI to where users spend most of their day, such as Gmail, making workflows smoother, faster, and brighter.

With more enhancements promised on the horizon, it’s clear that AI assistance in the workspace is no longer optional; it’s essential.
